UNIDO highlights strategic partnership and innovation at 2024 BRICS Forum on Partnership on New Industrial Revolution

Xiamen, China, September 10th, 2024 – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) participated in the 2024 BRICS Forum on Partnership on New Industrial Revolution (PartNIR), held by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China in Xiamen, China. The Forum, themed “Fostering High-Quality Partnership and Embarking on a New Journey of New Industrialization,” gathered high-level representatives from BRICS nations and beyond, including ministers, industry leaders, and international organizations.

UNIDO’s keynote address

Mr. Ciyong Zou, Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director of UNIDO, delivered a keynote speech during the main Forum. In his address, Mr. Zou emphasised UNIDO’s commitment to fostering industrial transformation and sustainable development within the BRICS nations. Highlighting the significant role of BRICS as industrial powerhouses, Mr. Zou recalled the Director General’s vision: “The BRICS nations represent a powerhouse of industrial potential. UNIDO is committed to strengthening cooperation among them and unlocking this potential for the benefit of all.”

Mr. Zou detailed UNIDO’s strategic initiatives, including the BRICS Centre for Industrial Competencies, the Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center (SMIC), and the AIM Global Centre of Excellence. These initiatives support BRICS countries in their journey towards industrialization, focusing on sustainable practices, digital transformation, and enhancing industrial competencies across sectors.

Ceremony of new members joining the UNIDO Global Alliance on AI for Industry and Manufacturing (AIM Global)

One of the highlights of UNIDO’s participation was the Ceremony marking the commitment of new members to join the UNIDO Global Alliance on Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Manufacturing (AIM Global). A flagship initiative of UNIDO, the Alliance aims to leverage AI-driven solutions to boost industrial efficiency, sustainability, and innovation. The Ceremony underscored the growing momentum and commitment to integrating AI into industrial processes, aligning perfectly with the Forum’s goal of fostering high-quality partnerships.

Notable high-level participants

The Forum featured a lineup of high-level participants, reflecting the global significance of the event. H.E. Ms. Dilma Rousseff, President of the New Development Bank, delivered opening remarks. Minister-level representatives from China, Cuba, Ethiopia Guyana, Iran, Morocco, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe, delivered remarks at the Forum.

Background on UNIDO and BRICS Cooperation

UNIDO has been at the forefront of industrial development initiatives within the BRICS framework, aligning its projects to support the New Industrial Revolution. The BRICS Centre for Industrial Competencies, endorsed at the recent BRICS Industry Ministers Meeting in Russia, will catalyse industrial cooperation among BRICS countries. The Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center (SMIC) and the AIM Global Centre of Excellence in AI are other critical components of UNIDO’s strategy, designed to empower industries through digital transformation and smart manufacturing technologies. By establishing a dynamic network, UNIDO aims to build capacities, promote best practices, and foster innovation across critical industrial sectors.

UNIDO continues to be a strategic partner for the BRICS nations, providing technical expertise, policy guidance, and a platform for collaborative industrial development. The BRICS Forum on PartNIR 2024 has set the stage for further deepening of partnerships, with UNIDO poised to play a central role in advancing the collective industrial aspirations of the BRICS countries.
