Vienna, Austria – 29 August 2024 – The Global Alliance on AI for Industry and Manufacturing (AIM Global), an initiative spearheaded by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) took center stage in a key panel discussion on “Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing” at the 18th IFAC Symposium on Information Control Problems in Manufacturing (INCOM 2024), held on 29th August 2024 in Vienna, Austria. This discussion spotlighted the pivotal role of digital transformation in steering European manufacturing towards a greener, more digital future, in line with UNIDO’s mission to advance inclusive and sustainable industrial development.

Ana Paula Nishio de Sousa, Chief of the Division of Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence at UNIDO, joined an esteemed panel of experts to delve into the integration of digital technologies within sustainable manufacturing practices. The session, titled “How European Manufacturing is Shaping Our Greener and Digital Future,” was moderated by Sebastian Schlund from Fraunhofer and TU Wien (both AIM Global Members) and featured a keynote speech by Caroline Viarouge, CEO of EIT Manufacturing.

In her address, Nishio de Sousa underscored the critical role of digital transformation as a catalyst for sustainable development in the manufacturing sector. She reiterated UNIDO’s commitment to support developing countries in adopting cutting-edge technologies that minimize environmental impact while boosting industrial efficiency.

“Digital Technologies, like AI and IoT, play a key role in making manufacturing more environmentally friendly by optimizing processes and reducing carbon emissions”, said Nishio de Sousa. “UNIDO and AIM Global are dedicated to empowering industries globally to leverage AI and other digital tools to drive the green transition, particularly in emerging economies where the potential for impact is substantial.”

The panel discussion also featured insights from Daniel Valtiner of Infineon Technologies Austria AG and FH Kärnten, Enzo Frazzon of  Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, and Dmitry Ivanov of the Berlin School of Economics and Law. Each panellist offered unique perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing the manufacturing sector as it navigates the dual imperatives of digitalization and sustainability.

The event highlighted the necessity of cross-sector and cross-regional collaboration to achieve sustainable industrial growth, and the need to democratize technology so that their benefits are shared by all. Attendees were presented with various strategies for integrating digital innovation into manufacturing processes, with a particular emphasis on the role of artificial intelligence, big data, and smart technologies in reducing carbon footprints and enhancing production efficiency.

INCOM 2024 drew a diverse audience, including industry leaders, policymakers, and academics, all dedicated to advancing sustainable manufacturing practices. The insights shared during the panel discussion will bolster ongoing efforts to align industrial growth with environmental sustainability.
